Volunteers: New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home at Paramus If spending a bit of time helping and socializing with veterans appeals, this volunteer group offers such an opportunity. The Veteran’s Home accommodates over 300 residents. Many of these folk would appreciate and enjoy social contact with a “new face” and also welcome assistance when traveling to a social event such as bingo, an entertainment program, etc. Other opportunities to assist are also available to volunteers. Volunteering at this facility does not require commitment to a fixed schedule.. Chair: Stan Feldman (201) 447-4808 |

BRIDGE GROUP Our Bridge Group meets weekly on Tuesdays (when there is no Club general meeting) at 1:00 PM in the drop-in center at Community Church of Glen Rock. We play at various skill levels to meet the abilities of beginners through advance play in a congenial, enjoyable setting. Our tables for beginners are taught by our more experienced players, and graduates of the beginners’ tables can progress through an intermediate level table to the advanced tables. We provide bridge sessions at no cost to members of the Activities Club. We encourage prospective and existing Activities Club members to join our Bridge Group. If you have an interest in learning the game of bridge as a beginner, or in sharpening your skills, or in joining our Bridge Group for the sheer enjoyment of playing, contact: Howard Hanes, Chair – Bridge Group, at 201-445-4603. |

GENEALOGY GROUP The Genealogy Group meets on the second Monday of the month at 1:30 PM in the Community Church drop-in center. The chairman is Dick Hahn, (201) 652-4083. The monthly meetings are group activities that help with suggestions and tips on tracing your ancestry. They also provide an audience to share in the journey that tracing your genealogy through the documented history of your lineage will provide you. Many newcomers to this field of study think they can’t find anything because all their ancestors have died and they have limited information readily available. Absolutely wrong; our ancestors’ lives have all left paper trails that we can access. Ridgewood Library has excellent resources and, if you’re computer-equipped, many sources are available on-line. Come join the group and bring along your wife, and we will get you started on a rewarding journey. |

5 to 7 Group The 5 - 7 Group meets for dinners between 5 and 7 pm. It gives an opportunity for members of The Activities Club to get better acquainted while enjoying some of the culinary arts in the area. The chairman, Dick Hahn ((201) 652-4083), distributes a list of members who have expressed an interest in collegial dining and also has developed a list of restaurants we have visited. Members of the Group are encouraged to invite each other for an early evening out; it seems that about five diners make for a convivial group. Sign up today by calling the chairman, and get to know your fellow Activities Club members better.

Science Group is scheduled to meet on the second Wednesday of each month at 10:15 am at the Ed Center. Besides these regular sessions, we take advantage of scientifically interesting places to travel and interesting people with whom to discourse whenever they are available. Our excursions have included the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, the Rose Center for Earth and Space of the American Museum of Natural History, and the Department of Biology at William Paterson University, among others. Many of our members have professional backgrounds in science or technology, and many lack the background but not the interest; they all come together monthly to keep up with developments in the world of science. If you are interested in enjoying the process of exercising your brain cells, give one of the co-chairmen, Ron Greenberg (201-447-2611) or Bernie Beck (201-447-0538), a call. |

Classic Movies Group is dedicated to offering timeless classic films. These reels often provide opportunity to view favorite directors and performers in action again. We have included Flynn, Fonda, Peck, Cagney, and Newman as well as early films of Connery, Redford, and Caine. We have included films of rousing adventure such as Captain Blood and Rob Roy; spy stories (The Ipcress File and the musical tale of Darling Lili). Comedies such as The Lady Eve, Ball of Fire, and Born Yesterday have recalled the comedic talents of Judy Holliday and Barbara Stanwyck. A few recent acclaimed independent films have been offered for many in the group to see for the first time. Examples are the Dutch WWII spy story Black Book and Ed Harris’ western Appaloosa. Attendees are encouraged to suggest future selections. Refreshments are provided during each film. Join us for laughter, adventure, or a puzzling mystery! The welcome mat is out to attend on the third Thursday. Chair: Gordon Wallace (201) 444-2717 Co-chair: Stan Feldman (201) 447-4808 |

Book Discussion Group has chosen over sixty books since its start in 2004. These volumes have inspired fascinating, perceptive discussions and amiable, and at times, forceful disagreement, if that makes any sense. We have read outstanding histories and biographies such as Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Team of Rivals, David McCullough’s 1776 and Harry Truman, and James Swanson’s Manhunt (chasing Lincoln’s assassins). We read two truly exciting stories, the fictional Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane and the true Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson about dangerous diving off the Jersey shore to a WWII U-boat. We have read a lot of mysteries, in many cases introducing new authors to our members. These include David Housewright, John Sandford, Kathy Reichs, Nevada Barr, and Michael Connolly. The group certainly welcomes suggestions. We acquire copies for the Glen Rock Public Library; so the book is readily available about a month before the discussion, which occurs on the last Monday of the month at 1:30 pm. at Community Church. Popular Music Group meets once a month (with a break during the summer) in a member’s home. These sessions typically last between 2-3 hours. About half this time is focused on listening to music, with the remainder being spent enjoying desserts, beverages and friendly conversation. The music offered includes big bands, swing, vocals, jazz, show tunes, country, bluegrass and more. Classical and the very current pop style music are not part of this group’s music “scene.” Club members who enjoy relaxing while listening to music as well as socializing would be very welcome additions to this group. The Coin Collecting Group was created for those members in our Club who enjoy learning about or owning these miniature pieces of art which have been around since their invention as currency, generally thought to be about 750 BC. Coins are collected for a variety of reasons but most often for their individual appeal based on factors such as history, society, beauty, rarity and, of course, value. Our group provides topical information monthly that may also be of interest to the Activities Club membership at large, such as coins for investment purposes. In addition to coin collecting the group may also discuss paper currency, bullion and other precious metals. Our group seeks the participation of any member who has been involved in coin collecting or has no collecting knowledge at all but has the desire to learn more about our nation’s most popular collecting hobby. It is estimated that one in three Americans have collected coins at one time or another. Please join the group or drop in at one of our meetings which are generally held on the last Friday of the month. Chair: Pete Pantina (201) 791-9604 illustration courtesy of coincollectingnews.org |
